Mondo Grosso

Inspired by soul, funk, jazz, Brazilian music, Mondo Grosso – the moniker of Shinichi Osawa – has been making his own original version of electro J-pop for 26 years now.

He just released his first album in 14 years named “Nandodemo Atarashiku Umarekawaru” (何度でも新しく生まれる), which means “I can reborn again and again”. As the title suggests, he featured other guest vocalists and collaborators on each song, as if Shinichi was reborn song by song – in another person.

The latest video off the album, “Labyrinth” – directed by Takeshi Maruyama – features the actress and singer Hikari Mitsushima (満島ひかり). In a moment of late-night forgetfulness, she dances through some of Hong Kong’s most characteristic streets.

Among several other music videos Mondo Grosso has released off his new record, “Planet Tantra” is sung by Asuka Saito from female idol group Nogizaka46 (乃木坂46), with the lyrics written and the sound co-produced by Tica•α, which is the moniker of Etsuko Yakushimaru from Sōtaisei Riron.

This song might be not only new song by Mondo Grosso, but also a taste of Sōtaisei Riron’s new direction on their next album.

In “Planet Tantra”, referring to Buddhism, she seems to be travelling all around the globe and seeing various religions – by reading books in her room. She seems to be walking in her own delusion called “Planet Tantra” to create new world order in seven days.

Other singles off Mondo Grosso’s long-awaited new LP include “Time” sung by bird, and “See You Again” sung by Kick a Show. Both of them are worth checking out, as is Shinichi Osawa’s new album in its entirety.
