St. South

The intimacy of St. South’s sound is perfectly in line with the one-person nature of this project by Olivia Gavranich, a singer based in Fremantle. But this restraint only helps to appreciate all the details hidden in her songwriting and performance.

Produced by Ivol, Olivia’s latest single “Cadence” represents the kind of folktronica you would expect from northern Iceland rather than Australia’s west. The track’s stripped-down arrangment is all but necesary to let Olivia’s (equally restrained) vocals be heard.

It also makes the delicate saxophone part by Ella Wisniewski resound as strong as if she was a small brass section. Demanding a repeated listen, “Cadence” is just the latest proof that in music “less is more”.
