Chui Wan

With inspirations ranging from “southeast Asian folk tunes” to “sufi music” to “20th century avant-garde composition”, Beijing-based troupe Chui Wan’s music is simply hypnotic.

On “Silence” – a brilliant song off their self-titled sophomore album – the bassist Wu Qiong’s gorgeously elusive voice is used to staggering effect.

Masterfully creating a dreamlike atmosphere that has an equivocal allure, it manages to transfix in both its beautiful delicacy and lavish arrangements. It’s a psychedelic playground that one doesn’t want to emerge from.
