Fuji Moodji

My friend recently got obsessed with a bass guitar Spotify playlist, and I immediately knew the perfect Ukrainian act to recommend: Fuji Moodji, an emerging duo with a captivating sound.

Fuji Moodji’s style is characterized by a minimalistic yet impactful approach, driven by strong bass lines and thoughtful arrangements.

Their peculiar lyrics set them apart from more mainstream acts, making them an intriguing option for listeners seeking something different. No need to understand it all, just think of vocals as an additional source of rhythm in their tracks.

Since forming in 2019, Gleb Petrenko and Oleg Mykhailin have been carving out their distinct sound, merging influences from post-rock to indie folk. Their previous single, “Cumcvat Dive Pound” showcased their knack for tackling complex themes with catchy melodies.

The Chinese fruit kumquat may resemble an orange but isn’t one, and similarly, we often project certain qualities onto others despite harsh realities. If you listen and decide it’s pure post-punk, give their other tracks a try to see how the story unfolds.

Their new single, “Ulamok,” released recently promises to delve even deeper into the human experience. This track explores personal narratives set against significant societal issues—touching on themes like war, displacement, and the challenges of long-distance relationships.

The band has already released an EP and an album in the past few years, and there are whispers of more music on the horizon.

Will their focus shift toward more personal stories or continue to emphasize tricky rhythms and captivating bass? Only time will tell, but they’re undoubtedly a solid addition to any playlist for lovers of real groove. Keep an ear out for Fuji Moodji!
