Our beloved postmodern Turkish music diva Gaye Su Akyol released her third LP at the very end of 2018, and its aftershocks are still shaking us.
The third album, “İstikrarlı Hayal Hakikattir”, which means “consistent fantasy is the reality,” has been getting lots of attention all over the world. And it also proved as that Gaye Su’s success is consistent and that’s why she made her dreams real with working hard.
We started to see her name at many international festivals all around the globe. I will now share two videos coming from that album, but released in 2019. The first one is for the song which gave its name to the LP: “İstikrarlı Hayal Hakikattir”.
You will see a psychedelic clip which was directed by Sinan Tuncay, and while you are watching it, you will make a journey between galaxies with a minibus, which is used in public transportation in İstanbul often and also in which you never have a survival guarantee.
The video has many messages related to Gaye Su’s world, which will be a good puzzle for you to solve and discover their meanings if you want to go inside of her world.
It was published at the beginning of March, and then in May another video came from the “İstikrarlı Hayal Hakikattir” album, this time for “Bir Yaralı Kuştum” (I was a Wounded Bird) directed by Aytekin Yalçın.
This time we are witnessing a dreamy world in black-and-white, with a more melancholic atmosphere. (By the way, you can find English translation of the lyrics under both videos on YouTube.) Lyrics and music belong to Gaye Su Akyol, and the music was arranged by Ali Güçlü Şimşek and Görkem Karabudak besides Gaye Su.
I can write many sentences about Gaye Su here, but I recommend you to catch one of her concerts in your neighbourhood and create your definiton of her and her music.
If this post does not encourage you to listen to her yet, Iggy Pop mentioned Gaye Su recently in his radio program on BBC Radio 6, and he played “Şahmeran” from her last album while he was calling Gaye Su a crazy Turkish phenomenon.
