Helewaut & Hecke

‘Love rears’ is about the dark side, not of the moon, but of love, where contact is lost.

People with whom I often talk about music know that I have a soft spot for debut singles and albums. The energy, joy, frustrations and teenage angst are rarely as pure as on a release by an artist of about 20 years of age. It should therefore come as no surprise that the Belgian section at beehype often features young acts.

Today we are doing it slightly differently. Rudolf Hecke and Els Helewaut have been earning their spurs since the 80s with various projects or bands such as Company of State, Pop In Wonderland or under his own name (Rudolf Hecke) on the one hand and Elisa Waut (Els Helewaut) on the other.

Some of these resulted in respect rather than success, while ‘Grow a Baby‘ (Pop in Wonderland, 1994) and ‘Four Times More‘ (Elisa Waut, 1986) were huge hits.

‘Love rears’ is about the dark side, not of the moon, but of love, where contact is lost.

Rudolf Hecke is a huge fan and connoisseur of Serge Gainsbourg – he has already written three books about the French bad boy, one of them will be published in October 2020 – so it should come as no surprise that the French superstar and his daughter are never far away in this man-woman duet. Simon Casier’s (Balthazar, Zimmerman) strong plectrum bass line certainly has its merits here as well.

On this single, the second duet by Helewaut and Hecke, after ‘Let’s Not Give A Damn‘ from 2016, a lot of talent has been collected. The result is a catchy ballad about the misery that can be caused by love. A medal always has two sides. So there is no reason to feel guilty when you enjoy the beauty of this pain.
