Blending orchestral arrangements with subtle electronic beats, Argentinian musician Juana Sallies evokes the depths of the ocean.

Juana Sallies is a composer, vocalist, and visual artist originally from Ushuaia — the world’s southernmost city — now based in Buenos Aires.

This year she released “Ancora”, her third solo album (in addition to her work with Turba Par and JS JS). As its title suggests, the record revolves around the image of the anchor: the object cast to the seabed to keep a vessel in place. Throughout the album, sinking becomes a way of staying grounded: a form of emotional resilience, as Sallies herself describes it.

Released via Isla Desierta Discos, “Ancora” features nine songs that evoke the depths of the ocean through a rich sonic palette, blending orchestral arrangements with subtle electronic beats. Sallies’ deep sensitivity to nature and the environment allows the album to move effortlessly between contemplation, introspection, and the growing urgency of a planet under increasing ecological strain.

In that sense, the sea becomes more than a setting: it emerges as a metaphor for human existence itself, where fragility, resilience, and the search for grounding coexist beneath the surface.
