Mari Kalkun & Runorun

“Tii ilo” is Mari Kalkun’s truly international album. Released on a Finnish label Rockadillo, it’s been recorded with an Australian-Finnish group Runorun.

A follow-up to her 2010 album “Vihmakõnõ”, Mari’s new effort perfectly combines etno music and old stories with modern approach towards sound design. She plays with words and silence, and some of her compositions tend to get quite close to ambient music, and away from traditional ways of interpreting traditional music.

A beautiful video off this record, “Jakopi unõnägo” (meaning “Jakop’s Dream”) is a great example of that attitude.

With this new album, Mari Kalkun & Runorun have been quickly gaining recogniction not only in Estonia and Finland, which hopefully bring them more invitations from abroad.

Be sure to catch them live if you ever have a chance. And as for internationality, we just heard “Tii ilo” is being released in far Japan.
