Pothamus

Pothamus refines their signature mix of post-metal, sludge, and tribal influences, crafting a deeply immersive and atmospheric experience.

Belgian trio Pothamus returns with “Abur”, their sophomore album, released on Pelagic Records. Following the success of “Raya”, which was in our best Belgian albums list in 2020, expectations were high, and “Abur” not only meets but surpasses them. The band refines their signature mix of post-metal, sludge, and tribal influences, crafting a deeply immersive and atmospheric experience.

From the opening moments of “Zhikarta”, the album establishes its hypnotic pull, building through layers of ritualistic drumming, pulsating basslines, and ethereal yet ferocious vocals. Pothamus expertly balances raw intensity with meditative, droning elements, creating a dynamic interplay between crushing heaviness and transcendental calm.

The incorporation of unconventional instruments, such as the Surpeti, enhances the album’s ceremonial and otherworldly feel.

Tracks like “Ravus” showcase the band’s ability to shift between relentless aggression and moments of haunting beauty. Sam Coussens’ vocals alternate between guttural screams and ethereal chanting, adding depth and contrast to the compositions. Meanwhile, “De-varium” slows the pace, leaning into a minimalistic yet deeply resonant drone, offering a brief reprieve before the next sonic storm.

The 15-minute title track, “Abur”, serves as a masterful closer, encapsulating the album’s full spectrum—from delicate, floating melodies to monolithic riffing and cathartic crescendos. The production is dense yet detailed, allowing every instrument to breathe, while the mix enhances the album’s immersive quality.

Beyond its sonic weight, “Abur” is a spiritual journey. Drawing from Eastern influences and shamanistic rhythms, it transcends traditional genre boundaries, positioning Pothamus as a unique voice within the post-metal landscape. Best consumed in one sitting, but even experienced in standalone moments, “Abur” demands full engagement and rewards listeners with a gripping, almost transcendental listening experience.

This isn’t just an album; it’s a sonic ritual—one that cements Pothamus’ place among the genre’s most compelling innovators.
