Soundtoy (声音玩具), founded in 1999 in Sichuan, by singer-songwriter Ou Jiayuan, and now based in Chengdu, has become one of the most influential bands in the Chinese rock music scene during the last decade.
They’ve reached almost iconic status in many circles and it’s easy to see why. Rich storytelling, detailed and crafted musical arrangements, and an emotional melody that soar, the band lays it all out for their new album, “Midas Touch” (爱是昂贵的).
An eight-minute opus off this record, “Star Flight by Discovery” is accessible but far reaching, ambitious yet concise – the band is at complete control of their sound which remains larger-than-life even as they plow through one genre after another telling the tale of a space ship drifting through the great unknown.
