A dentist by day, located on the wonderful Greek island of Nisyros, Theologos Mamolis releases his first full length album, “Luxemvourgo” (Λουξεμβούργο), on Louvana Records, one of the most unique and adventurous labels of Cyprus.
Theologos Mamolis (Θεολόγος Μαμώλης), born in Athens, is a songwriter that chews up rebetiko and Greek folk music, waltz, spirited rock and classic reggae (to name a few styles), and spits out a fresh mixture of Greek music.
Using his humour and intriguing lyrics, he combines different elements to his songs, and while some of these components may sound familiar to the Greek listeners, they would probably catch the attention of the outlanders (as it happened with some of the beehype’s editors).
The various guest musicians are plentiful, encapsulating many different sounds and giving more interesting depths on the album, while the production is arranged by Lefteris Moumtzis, who alongside plays most of the instruments.
“Η Θάλασσα Γκρινιάζει” (The Sea Grumbles), sung by Petros Malamas, is a bizarre 3-minute song that I have listened to a few days ago and got hooked in my head immediately, an enjoyable pop tune that hails from the Greek tradition.
