Tono S.

One of the strongest musical accounts of Slovak history in the past few years from hip-hop frontrunner Tono S.

Mostly when you hear people talking about the Slovak hip-hop scene, they moan about two things. Its dirty and shallow language and the reluctance towards making a strong political statement. The truth is, this is no longer the reality. Slovak hip-hop is becoming more and more interesting in the lyrical sense and Tono S. is one of the frontrunners of this trend.

His latest single, “Neublížil som” (“I didn’t hurt anyone”), is one of the strongest ones yet. He deals with one of the scariest things of Slovak modern past – a political murder and kidnapping of nineteen-nineties. Tono S. manages to put these topics into striking verses with a clear message. It is one of the strongest musical accounts of Slovak history in the past years.

Besides – how many hip-hop tracks can give you such goose bumps in less than three minutes?

*The song’s title comes from Slovak prime minister Vladimír Mečiar‘s TV monologue when it was clear – after the elections in 1998 – that he won’t be in the government anymore. It’s a line from a local song he was “singing” in a TV show as his goodbye.
