Math-rock meets Ethio-jazz in transcontinental musical project uKanDanZ, which consists of Asnaqé Guèbrèyès, a vocalist hailing from Addis Abeba, joining forces with an all-French instrumental squad.
Their music is inspired by traditional and popular Ethiopian songs, but with its constant rhythm-shifting and sheer muscular force it invokes the raw energy of rock.
Guebreyes’s charismatic vocals find a perfect match in a combination of thunderous drums, groovy bass, noisy guitar, and shrieking sax, resulting in a hard-hitting yet arresting sound.
The video for “Tchuhetén Betsèmu”, the lead single off uKanDanZ’s new album, “Awo”, shows the band at what they do best, just rocking with full force.
A unique combination of musical styles and cultures, you can listen to “Awo” in its entirety on Bandcamp.
