Charismatic Sahrawi singer Aziza Brahim’s latest album “Mawja” resonates with mind, body and heart.
Western Sahara
Despite the worldwide popularization of desert-blues in the last couple of years, Aziza Brahim continues to stand as one of the most unique voices in the genre.
Haim Laroz is a multi-instrumentalist and a producer who never stops experimenting. Together with Alon Amano Kampino, an oud and guitar player, they formed a project called Desert Groove where they collaborate with Arabic-speaking artists from different cultures.
Aziza is a politically-charged songwriter originally from Western Sahara. She sings for the visibility of the ongoing conflict in her home country, and for the struggles of refugees in general. Currently based in Barcelona she incorporates a cosmopolitan mix of influences from that city. Such a mix – of Saharawi folk melodies, and rock production – can be heard on “Julud”, a song dedicated to her mother. The song also serves as a symbol of her love and admiration for her people.
